About the museum

Members of the Hilti family have been collecting art since the 1970s. In 1997 the systematic building up of a high-level collection began, and a year later the Hilti Art Foundation was established for it. It combines the collection of the Martin Hilti Family Trust with the private collection of Caroline and Michael Hilti, and today comprises more than 500 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photographs.

The focus areas are European classical modernism from roughly 1880 to 1950 and art after the Second World War up to the present. Expressionism, Cubism, Constructivism and Surrealism, Concrete Art, Zero and Minimal Art belong here, as does abstract painting after 1980. The foundation owns several works each by artists such as Max Beckmann, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Sean Scully and Sophie Taeuber-Arp.

To present the collection to a wide audience, the foundation opened its own museum building next to the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in 2015. The building by the Basel architects Morger + Dettli forms an ensemble with the neighboring building: both are made of polished concrete, but the Hilti building is light and the Kunstmuseum is kept dark. Access is through a shared foyer. Three large galleries with different lighting show changing presentations from the collection, sometimes supplemented by loans from other museums. Since 2025 there has also been a growing media guide.
