About the museum
The Walsermuseum documents the culture and history of the Walser settlers, who settled on the Triesenberg in the 13th century. The initiator is considered to be the Triesenberg parish priest Engelbert Bucher, who collected cultural heritage and everyday objects. In 1959 the municipality acquired house no. 19, built in 1601, today’s Walserhaus; two years later the first museum opened there.
After a village center was planned in 1976, the museum moved into a multi-story new building that opened on December 13, 1981. Here, across several levels, it shows the special features of the Walser: their history of immigration, dialect, freedom rights, a way of farming based on individual dairy farming (Einzelsennerei), religion and funeral customs, and the history of the parish. Agriculture, forestry and livestock farming, as well as rural and household life, in which families largely supplied themselves, are presented in detail.
A 25-minute multivision show, presented in four languages, offers a look at village life past and present. The Walserhaus “im Hag”, some 400 years old and about 200 meters from the museum, can only be visited on a guided tour and shows the austere living culture of the 19th century, with an open fireplace and a smoke-blackened kitchen. From time to time, special exhibitions supplement the offer.
