About the museum
The foundation was laid in 1967 by a gift of ten paintings to the State of Liechtenstein. A year later this became the Liechtensteinische Staatliche Kunstsammlung, which the artist and politician Georg Malin, its first curator, steered early toward international modern and contemporary art.
The state owes the museum building to a group of private donors who made it possible together with the government and the municipality of Vaduz. In August 2000 the building was handed over to the country as a millennium gift, and on November 11, 2000 the museum opened with Friedemann Malsch as founding director. It is run by the public-law foundation Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. Since January 2026 the museum has been led by Christiane Meyer-Stoll.
The dark cuboid was designed by the architects Meinrad Morger and Heinrich Degelo together with Christian Kerez. Its facade is made of tinted concrete, black basalt and river pebbles and has a gently reflective look; inside, six galleries are arranged around two staircases running in opposite directions, four of them with skylights. Since 2015 the Haus der Hilti Art Foundation has stood directly next to it and is structurally connected; the two share a common entrance and ticket desk. The collection is not shown as a fixed selection but in changing arrangements.
