About the museum

The Postmuseum has existed since 1930 and has belonged to the Stiftung Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum since 2006. It is located in the Städtle of Vaduz and preserves every stamp the Liechtenstein post has ever issued. Because the total is too large, only a representative cross-section is shown.

The exhibition traces the story from the region’s beginnings as a thoroughfare to modern philately. As early as the 15th century, the route of the “Lindauer Boten” (Lindau Messenger) between Lindau on Lake Constance and Milan ran through what is now Liechtenstein; it operated weekly until 1826, carrying mail, goods and travelers. An interactive presentation traces its route.

Liechtenstein has issued its own stamps since 1912. Original designs by the designers, printing plates and printed sheets show how an idea becomes a finished stamp. Special techniques such as laser cutting and the embroidered stamp issued in 2019 for the national anniversary have shaped the reputation of Liechtenstein’s issues among collectors. In 2018 the building was comprehensively renovated and received an online stamp catalog that makes all issues digitally accessible. In 2019 the museum was nominated by the European Museum Forum for the title “European Museum of the Year”.
