About the museum
The Küefer-Martis-Huus was built around 1730 and is one of the rare representative baroque farmhouses of the region. It was inhabited until 1993; in 1997 the municipality of Ruggell acquired the building, and in March 1999 it was placed under monument protection. It takes its name from Martin Biedermann, who took over house no. 53 from Johann Jakob Heeb in 1862; he had inherited the nickname “Küefer Marti” from his grandfather Josef Biedermann, a cooper. For generations, a small farm was run as a side business in the attached barn with stable.
Since its opening in 2002, the house has served as the municipality’s museum and cultural center. The ground floor, with the living room, tiled stove, sleeping chamber and kitchen with an old wood-burning stove, has been restored to its original state and furnished with historical household items, so that the living conditions of the former farmhouse can be understood. The rooms on the upper and attic floors are reserved mainly for exhibitions on regional topics.
The former stable has been replaced by the “Kulturtenn”, a modern wood and exposed-concrete extension for exhibitions by regional artists, readings, lectures and club events. The municipality of Ruggell runs the house; its program and operations are organized by a part-time management and supported by the municipality’s culture commission. Documentation of past exhibitions and several publications from the house are available on the website.
