About the museum
The poet Antanas Miškinis and his brother, the literary scholar and translator Motiejus, were born in Juknėnai village. When the street village was divided into separate farmsteads in 1914, the Miškinis family was allotted 24 hectares of land farther from the village; the birth house was moved there too, and the homestead was completed around 1929. In 2000 the children of the Miškinis brothers donated the homestead to the Utena District Municipality, and since 2005 it has been a branch of the Utenos kraštotyros muziejus (Utena Regional Museum).
The residential house displays photographs, books, household items and furniture of the Miškinis family. In a granary restored in 2004 there is a memorial exhibition of Antanas and Motiejus Miškinis with photographs, copies of documents and objects; at the other end an educational classroom was opened on 27 June 2006. In the restored cowshed there is a small room where Motiejus Miškinis taught young people from the surrounding villages during the First World War; concerts, poetry evenings and book launches are held here. Three carved roof posts (stogastulpiai) in the yard are dedicated to Motiejus, Antanas and the whole family.
Every June the Antanas and Motiejus Miškinis Prize is awarded at the homestead during the Antaninės; Winter Readings, Poetry Springs and autumn evening gatherings (pavakarojimai) also take place. The tours “How People Lived in Aukštaitija in the Past” and “The Life and Work of the Miškinis Brothers” are offered, as well as educational sessions.
