About the museum
The visitor centre is the gateway to Gražutė Regional Park: it provides information on the park's natural and cultural heritage, museums, craft centres, hiking trails, water and cycling routes, and accommodation.
The ethnographic exhibition of the Salakas region introduces the people of Salakas from the late 19th to the 20th century: their homes and household items, the customs of townspeople, festivities, old crafts, notable people and national minorities. Old photographs, maps and restored exhibits tell the history of the Salakas land; visitors can browse and read 40 manuscripts collected by teacher Vida Žilinskienė on the region's legends, vanished villages, people and crafts. Separately, an old book collection is displayed, mainly textbooks and prayer books from the early 20th century.
The visitor centre also houses the “Jūrų muziejus” (Sea Museum) of teacher Vida Žilinskienė – a collection of sea animals, corals, shells, souvenirs and fossils gathered over more than 50 years, now comprising more than 4,000 exhibits. It is probably the sea museum farthest from the ocean.
