About the museum
The Ginučių vandens malūnas (Ginučiai Water Mill) was built in the second half of the 19th century by the landowner Gimžauskas of Linkmenys, who called in several farmers to help. Because peasants' fields were flooded, lawsuits arose between villagers and the landowner. After Gimžauskas's death the mill passed to the village; during the war, when many mills in the surroundings burned down, people came to grind their grain here from far away.
The mill operated until 1968 – not only grinding flour, but also generating electricity for village residents with the force of its metal turbine. When the equipment broke down it stopped working; in 1978 it was bought by the Ignalina tourist base. Today the mill is under state protection and belongs to the directorate of Aukštaitija National Park and Labanoras Regional Park. It is one of six water mills in the park (Minčia, Ginučiai, Pakretuonė, Pakasas, Gaveikėnai, Brukninė) that has kept its authentic equipment.
