About the museum
In the autumn of 1959 a cultural centre was built in Tauragnai, the construction of which was overseen by the local poet Teofilis Tilvytis. After his death in 1969, the leaders of Utena district decided to commemorate his memory, and in 1971 the Teofilio Tilvyčio memorialinis muziejus was set up in the Tauragnai cultural centre.
After the restoration of independence the museum was renamed the Tauragnų krašto muziejus and its exhibition was changed. It now presents the history of Tauragnai from 1261 to 1990, introduces the most prominent cultural and artistic figures of the region, and tells the stories of deportees and fighters for Lithuania's freedom. During educational sessions visitors get to know the scientific and literary legacy of Dr Eugenija Šimkūnaitė.
The Tauragnų krašto muziejus is a branch of the Utenos kraštotyros muziejus.
