About the museum
The house at the junction of Gedimino and K. Donelaičio Streets was built in 1929 to a design by the architect Edmundas Alfonsas Frykas. Its façade and interior are decorated with Art Deco motifs, and its oak doors bear tulip and lily motifs, reflecting the search for a Lithuanian national style. The owners of the house, Pranas and Vanda Gudavičiai with their daughter, lived on the ground floor and rented out the other flats.
In December 2016 Petras Gaidamavičius and Karolis Banys bought the fifth flat. The flat has kept its authentic layout, parquet, floor tiles and many doors. In 2017–2020 the flat was restored: with the help of polychrome research the wall colours of 1929 were recreated, and the Art Deco and national-style bands hidden under paint were uncovered; authentic elements were restored, and furniture, books and household appliances were collected and put in order.
The museum opened on 9 June 2021. It was founded and is maintained by its founders themselves, without public funds. Visitors not only look at the flat but also experience how the people of Kaunas lived in the first Republic of Lithuania – this is an “experiential tour” created by the founders.

| Good to know | Walking in the premises in outdoor footwear is not allowed: you must take your shoes off or bring slippers or socks. Because of the fragile exhibits and the length of the tour, the recommended age is 14 and over; the tour touches on drug use in the interwar period. A programme, “Experience with Mrs Rita”, is also offered to those who have already visited. |
