About the museum
The Automuziejus Vilnius (Vilnius Car Museum) was founded through private initiative and opened its doors to visitors on 18 May 2023. The idea of setting up a museum of historic cars in the former Vilnius taxi park was born in 2016; the premises were rebuilt over seven years. The building in the Naujininkai district is an industrial heritage object from the 1970s: in Soviet times almost 800 taxis stood here, and there were an administration, repair workshops, washing bays and a petrol station. After the restoration of independence the taxi park was privatised and fell into disuse, until new owners decided to revive it in 2016.
On two floors covering about 4,600 m², more than 100 historic vehicles from ten countries are displayed – from 19th-century bicycles and carriages to cars that carried kings, popes and presidents, and the first Lithuanian racing cars. The exhibition presents more than 70 world brands, among them Ford, Cadillac, Rolls-Royce, Packard, Alfa Romeo, Volkswagen and Porsche. Among the famous exhibits are Antanas Smetona's Buick and a restored armoured Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL, which Vytautas Landsbergis used.
