About the museum
The house-museum stands in the old town of Anykščiai, opposite St Matthew’s Church (Šv. Mato bažnyčia). The writer Bronė Buivydaitė-Tyrų Duktė (1895–1984) spent her childhood in this century-old little house and later, after returning to Anykščiai, lived here until her death. She was the first Lithuanian woman lyric poet to publish a book of poems, as well as a playwright and memoirist, and the only native of Anykščiai to describe precisely how the town lived a century ago.
The old part of the house preserves the setting of the writer’s last years. At her writing desk her childhood memoirs “Pro vaikystės langą” (Through the Window of Childhood) and “Vargai vartus kilnoja” (Hardships Move the Gates) were written. The exhibition includes the writer’s books, a pre-war typewriter, her mother Karolina’s sewing machine, and paintings by her sister Stefanija and Stefanija’s daughter Jonė. In a small room, photographs show the writer’s life and creative path; the children’s bookshop “Auksinis batelis” (Golden Boot) is also here.
In the museum garden grow the writer’s favourite flowers and old apple trees; sculptures of characters from her works stand in the orchard, and a sculpture garden is being created. The Šaltupis stream flows past the little house. In the old part of the house there is a learning space, the “Stebuklingoji radasta” (The Magic Find), where educational programmes are held. The house-museum is a branch of the A. Baranausko ir A. Vienuolio-Žukausko memorialinis muziejus (A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Žukauskas Memorial Museum).
