About the museum
The Siauruko muziejus (Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum) is housed in the complex of the century-old Anykščiai narrow-gauge railway station. The station was built in 1901 in the northern part of Anykščiai, on the 750 mm gauge line Rubikiai–Anykščiai–Panevėžys. The station buildings, rails, water tower, cobbled square, a 96-metre riveted steel bridge over the Šventoji, embankments and culverts have been put in order here – a monument of technology, architecture and history that preserves the spirit of the 20th century.
The staff of the A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Žukauskas Memorial Museum began collecting exhibits on the history of the narrow-gauge railway in 1998. To mark the centenary of the narrow-gauge railway, in 1999 a temporary exhibition was set up in a former goods warehouse. In 2002 the locomotive Kč 4-107, made at the Škoda factory in 1949 and affectionately called “Kukuška” (“Cuckoo”), was brought to Anykščiai and became one of the museum's most attractive exhibits. In 2002–2003 a reconstruction project was carried out: the rolling stock was put in order, a shed was built to protect it, and hand-operated draisines and wagons for entertainment were acquired.
Visitors can now see the waiting room, the station master's office, a goods shed exhibition with railwaymen's tools, communication and signalling equipment, a pavilion with locomotives and goods wagons, and the exhibition of a livestock wagon recalling deportation. One can climb into the locomotive, a lorry or a rail motor car, and the reconstructed goods warehouse houses an educational hall with a cinema. The museum is a branch of the A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Žukauskas Memorial Museum.
