About the museum
The birthplace house of Jonas Biliūnas in the village of Niūronys consisted of two parts – a gryčia (farmhouse living room) and a stancija (parlour). Around 1906–1909 it was rebuilt and turned to face the other way. Around 1932, when the land was divided into individual farmsteads, the son of the writer's brother Mykolas divided the homestead among the heirs, so that today only the gryčia survives in Niūronys of all the Biliūnas homestead buildings. It recalls the writer's childhood and his summer returns from Liepāja, Tartu, Leipzig, Zurich and Zakopane.
In 1989, on the 110th anniversary of Jonas Biliūnas' birth, a cross was erected at the homestead. The museum has been created here since 1960, and some of the exhibits are still received from the grandchildren of the writer's brothers and sisters. Today it is a branch of the A. Baranausko ir A. Žukausko-Vienuolio memorialinis muziejus.
In the old left side of the house, the former stancija, a small exhibition is set up: modest furniture and household items that belonged to the Biliūnas homestead are displayed – an old table, a bed, long benches, a towel rail with a linen towel, a dowry chest acquired later, a cupboard, a spinning wheel and others. A valued exhibit is a small table gnawed by woodworms, probably described in the story “Lazda” (The Stick). In another small room there are display boards with photographs of the most important moments in the writer's life, and photocopies of his letters and manuscripts.
Wooden sculptures of the characters of the writer's works stand by the path and the homestead; next to it rises the Beržų kalnelis (Birch Hillock), which the writer liked to climb when he returned to his native home.
