About the museum
The Kuršių nerijos istorijos muziejus first opened its doors on 16 September 1969, in the building of the then disused Lutheran church of Nida. Soviet ideology limited the content of the exhibition, so the main attention was given to the formation of the Spit and the lagoon, nature and the trades of the residents. When the church was returned to believers in 1989, the exhibition was dismantled.
Later the museum had no permanent location for some time: in 1995–2002 the exhibition on the residents' trades was housed in rented premises. Since 2002 the museum has been located in a new building in Nida, on Pamario gatvė, in the northern part of the town, near the Thomas Mann Memorial Museum. It now belongs to the institution Neringos muziejai (Neringa Museums).
The exhibition presents the traditional trades and customs of the Spit's residents: crow catching for food, fishing tools and boat models. A mannequin demonstrating a particular fishing method, bumbinimas, attracts attention. The most valuable part is the Stone Age finds from the archaeological excavations carried out in Nida in 1974–1978: a part of a wooden log, clay pots and stone axes.
A separate theme is devoted to the Nida post station, which stood beside the postal road of European importance that ran through the Curonian Spit until 1833. In 1785 the owner of the station, Frydrichas Casimiras Kuvertas, was granted a licence to brew beer in his tavern; documents, photographs and maps tell of this period of prosperity. In 2022 the exhibition was renewed under the European Neighbourhood Programme project “Immanuelis Kantas ir Thomas Mannas: genius loci – regiono dvasia” (Immanuel Kant and Thomas Mann: genius loci – the spirit of the region).
