About the museum

The Mizgirių gintaro muziejus (Mizgiris Amber Museum) in Nida was created by the amber collectors Kazimieras Mizgiris and Virginija Mizgirienė. Here amber is presented in artistic forms, while scientific knowledge about it is conveyed through interactive means. The museum's main idea is the amber-tree forest and the river: the flowing river symbolises the amber route from nature to culture.

The exhibition gains a unique character from a rich collection of rare ambers and works of art, as well as from panoramic screens designed especially for this museum, showing a virtual narrative about how amber is formed. A 3D film shows the Amber-Tree Forest, which grew some 40–50 million years ago, and on the multimedia bridge a poetic account tells how the Curonian Spit was formed.

The exhibition includes a practical workshop space, where art introduces the physical and healing properties of amber; touch screens show an amber encyclopaedia in three languages and a world amber map. On the second floor there is a gallery with works by Lithuanian and foreign artists. The most famous exhibit is the “Perkūno akmuo” (Stone of Perkūnas), weighing 3,820 g, the largest sea amber in Lithuania.
