About the museum
The Nidos žvejo etnografinė sodyba stands on the shore of the lagoon, in the southern part of old Nida, in the former village of Hakenas. The homestead was built by local craftsmen in 1927 and consisted of two houses joined together, so that a young family could settle next to its parents. Part of the house where the museum is now set up was home to the fisherman Martynas Purvinas and his family; later his stepson Johanas Peleikis took over the fishing business. In 1944 the family, like most inhabitants of the Curonian Spit, left for northern Germany.
The homestead was badly damaged by the ice drift of 1970. In 1973 restorers from Klaipėda rebuilt both the residential and the farm buildings, and in the house on the lagoon side an exhibition was set up on the interior and everyday life of Curonian Spit fishermen's homes at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
In 2017 the exhibition was renewed with contemporary means and creative installations. Its concept is the feeling of a frozen moment, as if the house were full of life and the authentic objects were displayed as if the owners had just stepped out.
