About the museum
Thomas Mann first visited Nida in 1929 and decided to build a summer house here. The house on Uošvės kalnas (Uošvės Hill) was built in 1930 to the design of the Klaipėda architect Herbert Reissmann. The Mann family spent three summers here (1930–1932).
In 1939 the house was nationalised and turned into a hunters' house, and after the war it was badly damaged. It was renovated in the 1960s, and in 1965 it was handed over to the Klaipėda city library. In 1995–1996 the house was restored according to surviving drawings and the memoirs of the writer's daughter, Elisabeth Mann. Since 2014 a new exhibition has operated here, presenting the facts of Thomas Mann's life and work with modern technologies and recreating the atmosphere of his summers in Nida. The house is also home to the VšĮ Thomo Manno kultūros centras (Thomas Mann Cultural Centre), which organises chamber music concerts, literary evenings and the Thomas Mann Festival.
