About the museum

The Elektrėnų krašto muziejus (Elektrėnai Regional Museum) traces its origins to the earlier Elektrėnų literatūros ir meno muziejus (Elektrėnai Museum of Literature and Art), whose activity began in 1977 in the literary courtyard of the Elektrėnai “Ąžuolynas” progymnasium. There a composition of characters from the fairy tale “Eglė žalčių karalienė” (Eglė, Queen of the Serpents) was created, and bas-reliefs of famous Lithuanian writers and poets, made by the sculptor Dalia Palukaitienė with pupils, were displayed. Later the museum expanded inside the school.

One of the most important parts of the collection is the 41 sculptures of Lithuanian literary classics and of characters from their works, created by the recognised sculptor and folk artist Ipolitas Užkurnis (1926–2004). On 1 January 2024 the Elektrėnų literatūros ir meno muziejus was reorganised into the Elektrėnų krašto muziejus, whose activity focuses on the ethnographic and historical heritage of the region.

The museum is housed in the granary of the Abromiškės manor estate, which dates from the second half of the 19th century; it has been restored and adapted for museum activity. It has one exhibition hall presenting I. Užkurnis’s works; events, educational sessions, lectures and temporary exhibitions also take place here.
