About the museum

The Žemės gelmių informacijos centras (Earth Depths Information Centre) in Vievis grew out of the former Lithuanian Geological Museum. Museum exhibitions began to be prepared in the core store built in 1980; in 1992 the core store was combined with the Vilnius exhibition and the Geology Museum was founded. In 2000 the Vievis store was given the status of an independent institution, the Lithuanian Geological Museum. A unified exhibition of Lithuanian geology was started in the museum, showing in chronological order the development of the structure and composition of the Earth's interior and the formation of mineral resources.

In 2014 the government decided to attach the museum to the Lithuanian Geological Survey, and on 1 January 2015 the Žemės gelmių informacijos centras of the Lithuanian Geological Survey under the Ministry of Environment was established.

The centre keeps the cores of the 1,148 most valuable boreholes drilled since 1953, with a total length of more than 140 km. The exhibitions comprise a polished boulder exhibition, an exhibition of Lithuanian mineral resources, the palaeontological exhibition of Alfonsas Žukelis, the memorial exhibition of Juozas Dalinkevičius and the rare mineral collection of Juozas Lisauskas. Outdoors, on 4.2 hectares, a boulder park has been laid out, in which more than 550 boulders brought from various parts of Lithuania are arranged in groups. The stones are grouped into 35 sets according to chemical composition and petrographic classification.
