About the museum
The forest museum “Girios aidas” (Echo of the Forest) was set up in 1972 by Lithuanian foresters on the initiative of the forester Algirdas Valavičius. The building stands in the forest on the edge of Druskininkai. In 1992 it burned down, and all the exhibits were lost; in 1993 the building was rebuilt.
Today it is a building of unusual architecture housing an information centre about the forest. Visitors are welcomed by displays of forest animals and birds presented in different seasons; a 400-year-old oak stretches through two floors, and recordings of birdsong and interactive games introduce Lithuanian nature.
Outside there is an educational trail, old beehives and a collection of sledges.
