About the museum
The Kraštiečių muziejus (Museum of Local Residents) is a branch of the Zarasų krašto muziejus (Zarasai Regional Museum). Its building, built in 1855, is one of the oldest brick buildings in Zarasai. On the modernly arranged ground floor are displayed works by famous Jewish creators of the Zarasai region: photographs by the interwar photographer and participant in the Lithuanian independence wars Moisiejus Botvinikas, reproductions of paintings by the painter and teacher Yjegudas Penas (Yehuda Pen), the first teacher of Marc Chagall, and an exhibition of the illustrations of the famous American cartoonist Al Jaffe, “Vaikystės nuotykiai Zarasuose” (Childhood Adventures in Zarasai).
On the first floor the gallery of the honorary citizens of the Zarasai region, the painters Šarūnas Sauka and Nomeda Saukienė, has been set up. Šarūnas Sauka is one of the most distinctive Lithuanian painters; in 1989 he was awarded the first Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art, and in 2017 Nomeda Saukienė received the Government Prize for Culture and Art. The exhibitions of both creators are arranged in a circle, so that the works can be viewed by choosing one of two directions.
In the basement there are exhibitions related to resistance: one devoted to the partisan movement in the Zarasai region, the other to Soviet repression. Artefacts, authentic documents and personal belongings are displayed. One hall is set up as an exhibition in memory of Augustinas Voldemaras (1883–1942), the first and later Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania.
