About the museum
Rojus is a homestead founded at the end of the 19th century by the eminent horticultural pomologist Adomas Hrebnickis, professor at the St Petersburg Forestry Institute. In 1890 he received from his father-in-law a plot of land so poor that the locals called it Velnynė (“Devil's Place”), but the professor planted an orchard of about 14 hectares there, and Velnynė became Rojus (“Paradise”). Throughout his life he studied varieties of apple, pear, cherry and plum trees, and his orchard held a huge collection of fruit trees.
In 1957 a branch point of the Vytėnai experimental station was established in Rojus and the restoration of the orchard began. The museum opened to visitors in 1961; at that time a monument to the professor by the sculptor Leonas Žuklys was also unveiled. The museum is set up in the house where Adomas Hrebnickis lived and worked. It is a branch of the Ignalinos krašto muziejus.
