About the museum

The Jonavos krašto muziejus (Jonava Regional Museum) opened its doors to visitors in 1989 in the old house of the teacher Balys Garmus on Birutės gatvė. In 1992 the central building of the old horse post station was assigned to the museum, and in 1993 it began to develop across the whole post station complex. Departments of art, ethnography and history were set up. Since 2018 the museum has operated as a department of the Jonava District Municipality Cultural Centre.

The post station complex was built in 1833–1835 on the important St Petersburg–Warsaw highway. It consists of two farm buildings and a former residential house, and the main building's façade is adorned with a portico with four Doric columns. After a fire in 1905 the buildings were reconstructed; after the First World War the station ceased to operate. Later there were post and communications offices here, and in 1974–1991 the district library.

The ethnography department displays old household objects collected from district residents, reconstructed old wooden toys and works by folk craftsmen. In the art department, artists' exhibitions change constantly, and lectures and film screenings take place. At the end of 2014 an archaeological exhibition was set up in the museum's cellar: it displays tiles, vessels and other ceramic finds discovered on the site of the vanished Skaruliai manor.

The museum runs educational sessions for children and adults, during which visitors can get to know flax processing, the casting of beeswax candles and the symbols of fabric patterns. The building complex also houses the Jonava Tourist Information Centre.
