About the museum

The Siesikų pilis (Siesikai Castle) was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is considered the oldest surviving building of its kind in Lithuania. Little is known about its supposed builder, Gabrielius Daumantas Siesickis – he is mentioned in sources only a few times. The Daumantai-Siesickis family owned the Siesikai manor for more than two hundred years, until 1736; after a short period under the Radziwiłł family, the castle and manor were sold to Konstantinas Daugėla in 1746.

In the middle of the 17th century the walls of the first-floor rooms were decorated with secular frescoes and rich plant ornament. In the middle of the 19th century, on the initiative of Dominykas Daugėla, the building was reconstructed and acquired classicist features. The palace once held a large collection of art objects and historical exhibits and a collection of weapons, and a pagan shrine was set up, but these treasures were lost during the wars of the 20th century.

Today the castle is a branch of the Ukmergė Regional History Museum (Ukmergės kraštotyros muziejus). Other buildings stand on the Siesikai manor grounds, for example the brewhouse building with a conference hall and a gazebo; visitors can also climb the observation tower.
