About the museum
The Vepriai Regional Museum was founded in 1967 by teacher Jonas Žentelis. When free rooms became available at the Vepriai school, he began collecting old objects from demolished farmsteads and bringing them there – mostly household utensils and tools. The museum's first premises were several abandoned rooms in the old school dormitory, which filled with exhibits within a couple of years. The museum began to attract visitors from the locality, the district and other towns; in 1985 it was awarded the "Aukštos kultūros muziejus" (High Culture Museum) award.
In Soviet times, J. Žentelis collected and preserved unique wayside shrines (koplytstulpiai) of the Ukmergė district and travelled around the Vepriai surroundings and more distant villages asking for exhibits. In 1993, on the initiative of Stepas Jankeliūnas, chairman of the S. Nėris collective farm (kolūkis), who had a new building constructed, the museum moved to its present premises. In 1995, by decision of the Ukmergė District Council, it became a branch of the Ukmergės kraštotyros muziejus.
Today, the exhibitions and collections hold more than 8000 items – ethnographic, sacred and archaeological. The museum has sections on history, culture, sacred art, household crafts and education, and holds a rich archive on deportation and resistance as well as materials about notable people of the Vepriai region.
