About the museum
The “Jablonskynė” is the parental home of the linguist, critic and translator Jonas Jablonskis (1860–1930), known as the “Father of Language”, who used the pen name Rygiškių Jonas, in Rygiškiai village, about 3 km from Griškabūdis. The family had moved there from Kubilėliai village (near Kudirkos Naumiestis) in 1877, when Jonas was 17 years old. As a grammar school pupil, student and teacher he returned there during his holidays: he read, wrote, played the violin and helped his parents with the farm work.
The residential house, built according to the typical farmhouse features of the Zanavykai region from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a granary have survived to this day. The homestead is a monument of national importance and was entered in the Register of Cultural Property in 1993. An oak tree known as the Oak of Rygiškių Jonas grows in the yard, and beside the house stands a wayside shrine in memory of the writer and priest Antanas Tatara.
At one end of the house there is a memorial museum to Jonas Jablonskis, which displays the linguist's scholarly works, family and kinship photographs and material about prominent people of this region. Village theatre festivals, camps for young kanklės players and other events take place at the homestead.
