About the museum
The Šakių dekanato muziejus has existed since 1996 and was officially opened on 8 November 2001. It was founded on the initiative of priest Deimantas Brogis and museum worker Bronė Sakalauskienė in the premises of the parish house. More than a thousand exhibits had been gathered by the opening.
Later the parish priest, Fr Sigitas Matusevičius, moved the museum to better premises in the courtyard of the parsonage. The exhibition is arranged in four rooms. Stands and display cases present clergy from the Zanavykai region, including bishops and priests who worked abroad, the Church's suffering under the Soviets and the history of the deanery churches. Liturgical vestments hang in the liturgy room, and other church objects and crosses are arranged there.
The museum is maintained from donors' funds, and admission is free. Tours are led for smaller groups.
