About the museum
Lazdynų Pelėda was the joint pen name under which two sisters, the Ivanauskaitės – Sofija Pšibiliauskienė and Marija Lastauskienė – signed their stories, novellas and novels at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century. Their father, Nikodemas Ivanauskas, a painter, inherited the Paragiai manor, and the sisters grew up and came of age here.
Encouraged by Povilas Višinskis, Sofija began writing stories in 1896 and later freely translated from Polish, including works by her sister Marija. From the beginning of the First World War both sisters lived in Paragiai. Sofija wrote her last major novella, “Ponas Dramblevičius”, here and died in 1926; Marija lived in the parents' homestead until the Second World War and wrote novels.
Through changing regimes the 3.4-hectare Paragiai homestead has survived, and in it operates the memorial museum. A visit gives an opportunity to learn about the sisters' lives, their surroundings and their writings, which have become classics of Lithuanian literature.
