About the museum
The Viekšnių vaistinės muziejus is housed in an authentic pharmacy founded in the second half of the 19th century, in a house built in the second half of the 18th century that previously belonged to the descendants of a priest of the Viekšniai Jewish community. It is the only rural-type pharmacy museum in Lithuania in which the pharmacist's family living quarters have survived, along with the complete history of the pharmacy written by the pharmacist's own hand.
The pharmacy exhibition is arranged in the main prescription room ("oficina"), two family rooms and the smoking chamber-chimney: furniture, drug-making devices, tools, vessels, medicines and pharmacy raw materials, 19th-century doctors' prescriptions and account books. Among the pharmaceutical materials are not only plant-based but also animal-derived items, such as crayfish stones (vėžio girnelės) or Siberian beaver castor sacs (sruogliai).
The second exhibition recreates the everyday life of an intelligentsia family in the first half of the 20th century in four living rooms and a kitchen. A medicinal herb garden of the pharmacist has been restored next to the museum, where practical sessions take place. The museum is a branch of the Mažeikių muziejus.
