About the museum
The museum was founded in early 1981, after the reconstruction of the ancestral home of Aleksandras Griškevičius's wife. As a public memorial museum of the pioneer of aviation in Lithuania, it opened in May 1981. Vilnius University Scientific Library and other helpers assisted in its establishment. Today the museum is a branch of the Mažeikiai Museum.
The exhibition “The Beginnings of Aviation in Lithuania” presents a model of the steam-powered flying machine (garlėkis) designed by A. Griškevičius, the autograph of this self-taught designer, copies of his books, instruments from gliders and aircraft, badges, medals and postage stamps collected on the theme of aviation, and a model of the aircraft “Lituanica”, which flew across the Atlantic Ocean in 1933. The museum also houses an ethnographic exhibition on the Viekšniai region and an exhibition of wood carvings by folk master Juozas Rušinas.
