About the museum
Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864) was a Lithuanian historian, educator and writer, the first to write a history of Lithuania in Lithuanian. After working in Riga and St Petersburg, he returned to Lithuania in 1850 and lived in Papilė for his last four years, where he died in 1864.
The memorial museum was opened on 27 October 1986 in the restored building where Daukantas is said to have taken refuge during the last years of his life. The exhibition presents the most important stages of his life and scientific work and his place in the development of Lithuanian science, literature and culture.
Daukantas was a versatile scholar: he studied historical sources, collected folklore, and prepared grammars, dictionaries and historical works, among them “Darbus senųjų lietuvių ir žemaičių” and “Istoriją žemaitišką”. The museum is a branch of the Akmenės krašto muziejus.
