About the museum
The Akmenė Regional Museum (Akmenės krašto muziejus) was established on 2 January 2007. Its founding was championed by the region’s enlightened citizens: the Akmenė community, artists, collectors and the editor of the district newspaper collected hundreds of signatures showing that the district needed a museum.
The museum holds and displays the collection of Borisas Izenbekas (1910–2006), one of Lithuania’s best-known collectors of diurnal butterflies; it is considered the largest such collection in the country. It contains about 5,000 diurnal butterflies from all over the world, of which about 2,000 are on display. Alongside it there are exhibitions of fossils, folk art and postage stamps, and a presentation of finds from the Papilė burial site.
For a shorter period, roughly from April to November, the butterfly house “Drugelių namai” operates with live exotic butterflies. The museum runs educational sessions on fossils, Baltic symbols, traditional crafts and butterflies. Its branches are the Lazdynų Pelėdos memorialinis muziejus in Paragiai and the Simono Daukanto memorialinis muziejus in Papilė.
