About the museum
The exhibition is set up in the house in Marijampolė where the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Kazys Grinius, lived with his family. The museum is a branch of the Marijampolės krašto ir Prezidento Kazio Griniaus muziejus (Marijampolė Regional and President Kazys Grinius Museum).
In 1904–1914 the Grinius house was a centre of cultural and political life in Užnemunė: meetings took place here, choir and play rehearsals were held, and the society “Šviesa” (Light) was founded, which set up schools, courses and libraries. On 28 May 1905, at the first public evening held here, the choir is said to have sung Vincas Kudirka’s “Tautiška giesmė” (The National Anthem) for the first time.
The exhibition presents K. Grinius’s political activity in 1920–1926 as prime minister, member of the Seimas and president, his family, life during the war years and his post-war activity in emigration, as well as his practice as a physician. In a separate room a pupils’ life of the early 20th century is recreated: the Griniai rented rooms to senior-form pupils, among them the future signatory of the Act of 16 February, Pranas Dovydaitis.
