About the museum

The Vilkaviškio vyskupijos bažnytinio paveldo muziejus was founded on 13 March 1992 on the initiative of Fr Gracijus Sakalauskas, rector of KKC. The museum's name has changed several times: at first it was the Religinės kultūros muziejus (Museum of Religious Culture), from 1995 it was called successively the Bažnytinio meno muziejus (Museum of Church Art), the Vyskupijos istorijos muziejus (Diocesan History Museum) and the Vyskupijos istorijos ir meno muziejus (Diocesan History and Art Museum), and later the Vilkaviškio vyskupijos muziejus (Vilkaviškis Diocese Museum). Its location changed too: at first it was at Bažnyčios g. 23, later it was moved to Vytauto g. 25 in Marijampolė.

The exhibits were collected from the churches and monasteries of the diocese, on the bishop's authority, by museum director Justinas Sajauskas. The exhibition opened on 16 December 1997 and operated until 2001; from 2002 the premises served as a storeroom. Since February 2023 the museum has been led by museum worker Elena Gvazdaitienė. The exhibition was reorganised and renewed with the help of volunteers and adapted for visits by small groups (10–12 people) of pupils, pilgrims or individual visitors.
