About the museum

The Marijampolės krašto muziejus is one of the oldest museums in Suvalkija. It was founded in autumn 1933 as the “Sodžius” museum on Vaičaičio gatvė. Its basis was the exhibits collected by the folklore collector Vincas Šlekys; about 1,000 exhibits had been gathered before the war. The museum changed its premises several times, was reorganised into a regional studies museum in 1948, and moved to the present buildings on Vytauto gatvė in 1964.

At the end of 1991 the building was seriously damaged by fire, so from 1991 to 2005 it was renovated and its old decorative elements were restored. From 2000 the exhibitions have been renewed: “Tautos dvasia” (The Spirit of the Nation) was opened in 2001, “Miestas prie Šešupės” (The Town by the Šešupė) in 2008 and “Buitis ir būtis” (Everyday Life and Being) in 2015. In 2020 the museum was renamed the Marijampolės krašto ir Prezidento Kazio Griniaus muziejus (Marijampolė Regional and President Kazys Grinius Museum).

The museum holds about 40 thousand household, ethnographic, art, literature, photography, numismatic and archaeological exhibits, which reveal the customs and way of life of the people of Suvalkija, the development of the Marijampolė region and town, and the period of the partisan movement and deportations. The exhibition “Miestas prie Šešupės” tells of the founding of the town, its changing names, its heraldry and life at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Part of the exhibitions is currently being reorganised.
