About the museum

The museum opened on 21 November 1993 in Marijampolė; it was founded by the former partisan liaison officer and political prisoner Aldona Vilutienė. Today it is a branch of the Marijampolės krašto muziejus (Marijampolė Regional Museum) and of the Prezidento Kazio Griniaus muziejus (President Kazys Grinius Museum).

The exhibition “Ginkluotas partizanų pasipriešinimas sovietų okupacijai 1945–1952 m.” (“Armed Partisan Resistance to the Soviet Occupation”) tells of the founding of the Tauras district, the preservation of documents, changes in command and structure, the operating areas of the units and the aims of the Suvalkija partisans. It shows an NKVD interrogation scene with a sound recording, a fragment of an interrogation room, a reconstruction of a Marijampolė prison cell, personal belongings, uniforms, weapons, documents, publications, memoirs and finds from searches for remains.

The exhibition “Tremtys, kalėjimai, lageriai” (“Deportations, Prisons, Camps”) presents the Lithuanian deportations of 1941–1953 into the depths of Russia: household objects, tools, clothing, handicrafts, photographs, maps of places of deportation and the suitcases with which deportees and political prisoners carried their possessions.
