About the museum
The museum was founded in 1967, to mark the centenary of the gymnasium. In 2026 it was substantially renewed, so visitors are now greeted by a modern and interactive exhibition. It tells not only the story of the school but also the history of Lithuania's national revival, culture and statehood.
The exhibition presents the history of the gymnasium from the Tsarist Russian period to restored independence. It introduces the prominent personalities connected with the school: Jonas Basanavičius, Vincas Kudirka, Jonas Jablonskis, Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, Algirdas Julius Greimas and others. Six signatories of the Act of Independence of 16 February 1918 attended the Rygiškių Jono gimnazija.
The museum's collections hold thousands of historical exhibits, documents, photographs and publications. In the renewed exhibition, history is presented using 3D technology, digital tools, audio recordings and smart screens, and notable personalities of the gymnasium, for example Vincas Kudirka and Jonas Jablonskis, “speak” interactively.
