About the museum
The Liubavas manor is one of the oldest manors in Lithuania: the 1546 treasury book of Sigismund Augustus already describes in detail the manor ponds that were being repaired at that time. Over the centuries the manor changed owners – it was held by the Goštautai, Radvila, Tyzenhauz, Tiškevičius, Golejewski and Sliżień families; in Soviet times it was nationalised. The estate consists of about twenty buildings of various purposes and a system of seven ponds by the Zalesa river; the stone water mill, an 18th-century oficina, a greenhouse and other structures have survived.
The museum was set up in the mill in 2011 on the initiative of the sculptor and manor researcher Gintaras Karosas. The restoration of the mill and the estate and their adaptation for culture were carried out by the public institution “Europos parkas” (Europe Park); the project was financed by Lithuania, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area. It is the only mill in Lithuania where all the technological equipment has been restored, and several production processes that took place there are shown – grain milling, timber and metal working, flax retting and even electricity generation; a century-old hydro turbine is working.
In 2012 the Liubavo dvaro malūnas-muziejus (Liubavas Manor Mill Museum) received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage and the Europa Nostra award for its quality restoration. The museum has permanent exhibitions on the history of the manor, its architecture, painting works and authentic objects – furniture, porcelain and other items.
