About the museum
The museum is housed in the historic school building in Ažulaukė, dating from 1927. In 2013 this building was handed over to the Vilniaus krašto etnografinis muziejus. The museum’s main focus is the study of the history of education in the Vilnius region and the preservation of its heritage. As political systems changed, the school network in the region was reorganised: many historic schools with deep traditions were closed, new ones were founded in their place, and generations of teachers changed.
The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve and present objects, documents and collections that reflect the development of education in the region. It presents exhibitions of the physics, chemistry, biology, geography, astronomy, mathematics, geometry and sports classrooms, technical teaching aids, the archive of Jan Pakalnis, the exhibition devoted to music teacher Gabrielius Jan Mincevičius, and an ethnographic pupil’s corner. The library holds about 400 school textbooks, which visitors may browse.
The collections are supplemented by photo, numismatic, bonistic and philocarty collections, toys, music scores and vinyl records. Visitors, especially children, can not only look at but also touch objects from the past: sit on old school benches, ring an authentic school bell, play the piano, try out a typewriter or old scales.
