About the museum

The Vilniaus krašto etnografinis muziejus is located in Nemenčinė, where it collects, preserves, researches and presents objects that testify to the everyday life and customs of the people of Vilnija (the Vilnius region). Over the centuries, different cultures, religions and languages have existed in this region, and people of various nations lived side by side. The museum has existed since 2000, and its exhibition came into being thanks to voluntary donations from people. The collections of the museum and its branches hold almost thirteen thousand exhibits, which are supplemented every year during local history expeditions.

The museum has permanent exhibitions, most of them devoted to ethnography. They include old household objects and utensils, tools of craftsmen and farmers, clothing, furniture, documents, books and works of art. Of particular interest are the Vilnius region farmhouse, the wood carvings by Vladislovas Dovnarovičius and Juzefas Milošas, a section presenting the path of flax from seed to cloth, and a shoemaker’s corner.

The museum has an event hall where exhibitions, concerts and scientific conferences take place, as well as pottery and weaving workshops. It has branches: the Traditional Crafts Centre at Houvaltai Manor in Maišiagala, the Kunigo Prelato Juzefo Obrembskio muziejus, the Vilniaus krašto švietimo muziejus and the palm weaving and household parlour in Čekoniškės.
