About the museum
The Pasieniečių muziejus (Border Guards Museum) is located in the premises of the Pasieniečių mokykla (Border Guards School) in Medininkai. It was founded on 6 March 2001, and the first exhibition, based on long-term and short-term displays of private collections, opened on 25 June 2002. The museum now has more than 3,000 exhibits relating to the creation and development of the Lithuanian state border protection system.
The core of the exhibition is the collection of the interwar border policeman Antanas Straukas: documents, photographs, awards, parts of uniforms and other objects kept by the family, among them his Order of the Cross of Vytis and the medal of the first decade of Lithuanian independence. An important treasure is a photograph of the headquarters of the I Parubežinis pulkas (1st Border Regiment), taken in Klaipėda in 1922. A geometric boundary marker is also shown, which once stood on the administrative line with the Vilnius region occupied by Poland.
The museum also presents the history of the protection of the state border from 1990 to the present day: documents, photographs and homemade insignia of the first border guards. A special place is given to the memorial exhibition of border guard Gintaras Žagunis, who died on 19 May 1991. Thematic collections are also being built up, for example of the uniforms of the border services of Lithuania and other countries.
