About the museum
The local history museum has operated in the Turgelių Povilo Ksavero Bžostovskio gimnazija (Turgeliai Povilas Ksaveras Bžostovskis Gymnasium) since 1964. Its exhibition consists of seven sections and about 3,000 exhibits.
A great deal of space is devoted to the Paulavos (Pavlovo) respublika (Paulava Republic). In 1767 the priest Povilas Ksaveras Bžostovskis bought the Aukštupis Merkinė manor, abolished serfdom (lažas), distributed land to the peasants and created a self-governing community with a constitution, a coat of arms, money and a parliament. The republic existed for almost thirty years. The museum displays fragments of manor-house decorations, publications and documents, folk household objects and objects connected with notable people of the Turgeliai area.
