About the museum
From the very beginning, Šiluva has been one of the most important shrines not only of the Samogitian diocese and later of the Archdiocese of Kaunas, but of all Lithuania. In 1608 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared here; the painting of the Mother of God with the Child, kept in the basilica, has been the focus of a living tradition of pilgrimage festivals (atlaidai) for five centuries. In 1993 Saint Pope John Paul II visited Šiluva and prayed there, and every year tens of thousands of pilgrims visit the town.
Conditions in the cold and damp basilica chapel were unsuitable for many of the treasures, so when the Pilgrim Centre was designed in 2009 it was planned to set up a new, modern museum exhibition on the history of Šiluva. Here visitors can get to know the history, culture and traditions of devotion of the shrine and the town.
One of the most important exhibits is an iron-bound chest, which around 1569, when Calvinism had gained ground, the last parish priest of Šiluva, J. Holubka, buried in the ground; in 1612, after Mary's apparition, a blind hundred-year-old man found it. Liturgical vessels and vestments were found in it (analogous items from the same period are displayed), as well as a copy of the act establishing the Catholic church in Šiluva. After the copy was discovered in 1622, the court cases were concluded and the church, together with its lands, was returned to the Catholics.
