About the museum
The Žalpių kraštotyros muziejus was founded in 2006 in the former primary school building of the Žalpiai volost (valsčius), built in the first years of Lithuanian independence. Construction of the school was started in 1918 on the initiative of the public figure Kazimieras Ralis; the first school year began in 1920. Later the school became a seven-year school and then a basic school, and when independence was restored only the primary classes remained. After the school was closed, in 2006 the local community decided to preserve the building and set up a regional museum in it.
The museum's exhibitions are devoted to notable people of the region: Jeronimas Ralis (1876–1921), the first translator into Lithuanian of Homer's “Iliad” and “Odyssey”; Jonas Garalevičius (1871–1943), organ builder and creator of the first glider in Lithuania; and Kazimieras Ralis (1885–1958), a member of the Constituent Seimas and public figure. The old classroom with authentic furniture, teaching aids and class registers is also presented, and in a separate corner old household furniture is on display.
The museum is a branch of the Kelmės krašto muziejus. Educational sessions for pupils are held here: a calligraphy lesson writing with pen holders (plunksnakočiai), sessions on Jeronimas Ralis and Homer's translations, and sessions on Jonas Garalevičius, the organs he built and the Žalpiai church.
