About the museum
The Skaudvilės krašto muziejus opened in 2019 in the historic building of the Skaudvilė rural district (valsčius) office, built in 1900, although the first museum in Skaudvilė had been founded as far back as 1977 by Dainotas Habdangas. Important events in the town took place in this building: the first Lithuanian evenings and cultural events; later medical treatment was given and household services were provided here; in Soviet times the NKVD headquarters and prison were located here, and until quite recently a police station.
The museum displays unique archaeological finds, an impressive medical collection, the office of the parish secretary, old documents, photographs, publications and finds from the Second World War. Skaudvilė was famous for its large markets, so the exhibition contains many craftsmen's tools, objects and weighing devices. The ethnography section tells of peasant life more than a hundred years ago.
The museum is a branch of the Tauragės krašto muziejus “Santaka”.
