About the museum
Antonbua is a fishing storehouse (sjøbu) in Midsund that belongs to Romsdalsmuseet and shows an important part of Midsund's history: deep-sea fishing and fish processing. Through the 1900s the business became increasingly specialised, and clipfish and herring salted in barrels became the two main products. The peak came in the 1950s and 1960s. On both sides of the Midsundet strait there were several fishing storehouses that received fish, salted herring and dried clipfish for export.
The fishing house is named after Anton Elias Ingebrigtsen Misund (1878–1957), who from 1903 was skipper of the “Brødrene”, the first deep-sea fishing boat in Midsund. From a small grocery shop he sold herring and fish, and in 1912 a new fishing house and quay were built at Strandheim. The site grew through the 1920s and 1930s, and Antonbua was eventually rebuilt as an L-shaped building with two floors and an attic.
The exhibition in Antonbua gives glimpses of this history and shows how the business at the site was typical of the industry in the area.
