About the museum
Arbeidersmåbruket Furuseth lies at Opakermoen in Nes. Johan Martinsen Furuseth worked at Funnefoss Tresliperi (wood-grinding mill), and in 1909 he bought some mål (an old Norwegian unit of land) of pine moorland (furumo) and began building up a small farm in his spare time. There he had a potato field, an orchard, a cow, a pig and seven small buildings, built with an eye for detail but from inexpensive materials. The smallholding became his life's work.
The buildings and the land around them have been preserved almost unchanged to this day, and Furuseth is regarded as one of the few remaining workers' smallholdings in Eastern Norway. It gives an insight into how the industrial workers at Opakermoen supplemented their income and provided food for their families alongside their work at the factory. The town grew up after the paper mill and the wood-grinding mill at Funnefossen came into operation in the 1870s.
The site is part of the Nes collections, which consist of Stein skole, the Nes church ruins, Funnefoss industrial workers' museum, Furuseth and Auli mill. Furuseth is run by Nes municipality, and a guided tour can be combined with a visit to Funnefoss industrial workers' museum, which lies at the end of the same road.
