About the museum

Funnefoss industriarbeidermuseum lies beautifully by the Glomma at Oppåkermoen in Nes. The museum was established in 1987 to preserve the memories of the industrial workers' era at the site, and it is first and foremost about the workers and their everyday lives, not about the factory itself. The starting point is the paper mill that the businessman Anders Olai Haneborg founded at Funnefossen in 1875. The factory provided work for 80 people and was the first large industrial workplace in Nes municipality.

After two years the factory burned down when a paraffin lamp was knocked over. Haneborg rebuilt it in masonry, this time as a wood-grinding mill (tresliperi) that made wood pulp. Most of those who worked there settled on Oppåkermoen, and the mill became the basis for the settlement. Many of the workers came from the crofter population (husmannsbefolkningen) in Romerike and Hedmark. The work was done in shifts, and at first the working day was twelve hours long.

The museum includes, among other things, Grønvoldsstua, a small house given by the Grønvold family, which shows what an industrial worker's home could look like in the early 1900s. Borghild Grønvold lived in the house for much of her life. The museum offers guided tours of the small workers' houses in the yard, with stories about life as an industrial worker at Oppåkermoen. It is a department of Nes samlinger in MiA – Museene i Akershus.
