About the museum
Aursfjordsaga is the only preserved frame sawmill (oppgangssag) in Northern Norway. Ingebregt Eliassen built a sawmill at the mouth of Lakselva in 1796, without permission from the estate owner, and received an official concession on 20 September 1799. In 1958 the sawmill was demolished because a new road was to pass by, but the saw frame and other important equipment were saved.
Arne Pedersen restored the saw in the years 1977–1982. Today it is used to train traditional craftsmen and to cut timber for restoration projects for the museum and others. The saw cuts about one metre per minute and takes logs up to nine metres in length. The operation uses various water-power solutions.
The old school in Hamnvåg, with an exhibition of old objects, also stands on the site. The facility is run by Midt-Troms Museum.
